How Much to Charge for a Mural: Price per Square Foot, Worked

October 26, 2026 · Pricing a service business

To work out how much to charge for mural painting, price the job from what it takes, then divide by the area you actually paint: paint, primer and sealer for that area, a design fee, your hours on the wall at the floor rate your year needs, and the lift, permit and trips, with a margin on top. In the illustrative wall below, the mural costs $7,798.13, a 30% margin prices it at $11,140.18, and that is $23.29 per painted square foot.

None of these figures are market prices. Every coverage, brush rate and rental rate belongs to one made-up artist and is there to be replaced with your own labels, your own rental quote and your own timing. Nothing here says which paint, primer or sealer suits a wall, or how to work at height; use every product and lift as its maker directs.

The mural price formula

painted area = (wall - openings) x share the design covers
materials = paint (at least one container per color)
                 + primer + sealer + sundries
design fee = design hours x your floor rate + mockup costs
painting hours = prime + transfer + background + detail + seal
+ setup for each day on the wall
mural cost = materials + design fee + painting hours x floor
                 + lift, permit and travel
price          = mural cost / (1 - margin)
mural per square foot = price / painted area

Step 1: your hourly floor

The example artist wants $48,000 a year kept after a 25% tax set-aside, carries $9,000 of business costs, and books 28 hours a week of client work for 44 weeks. Weather and delays take 15% of those hours, leaving 1,047.2 paid hours. The year needs $73,000.00, so the floor is $69.71 per paid hour. Forget the lost hours and you would set it at $59.25. With 14 unpaid hours a week of driving and admin, the artist keeps $25.97 per hour actually worked.

Step 2: measure the painted area

A 40 by 16 foot wall is 640 square feet. Taking out 2 openings of 3 by 7 feet leaves 598, and a design that covers 80% of that paints 478.4 square feet. Paint, hours and the price per square foot all run on the painted figure, not the wall.

Step 3: paint, primer and sealer

At 2 coats, 300 square feet a gallon and 15% lost in cups and on brushes, the area needs 3.75 gallons, or 4.00 in whole quarts. But the design has 18 colors, and one quart of each is 4.50 gallons. On this wall the color count sets the paint bill, not the area. Primer at 250 and sealer at 350 square feet a gallon are bought in whole gallons over the painted area.

Material Amount Each Cost
Color paint, one quart per color 4.50 gal $72.00 $324.00
Primer 2 gal $40.00 $80.00
Sealer 2 gal $85.00 $170.00
Sundries $150.00
Materials for the mural $724.00

That is $1.51 per painted square foot.

Step 4: the design fee

A first concept of 10 hours, 2 revision rounds of 3 hours and 4 hours of meetings and the site visit come to 20 design hours. At the $69.71 floor plus $40.00 of mockups, the design fee is $1,434.20. Each round past the 2 included is $209.13; put that in the contract. The logo pricing post works design time and revision rounds the same way.

Step 5: hours on the wall and days to book

Washing and priming at 100 square feet an hour takes 4.78 hours, and transferring the design 8 more. The background is 60% of the painted area, rolled at 60 square feet an hour per coat: 9.57 hours. The detail is 40% of the area, at 12 square feet an hour finished: 15.95 hours. Sealing at 120 square feet an hour adds 3.99.

That is 42.29 working hours. Each 8 hour day on site loses 1 hour to setup and cleanup, leaving 7 for the wall, so the work takes 7 days, and 49.29 hours to price. Holding 2 weather days in reserve means booking 9.

Step 6: lift, permit and trips

Booking 9 days at $250.00 a day is $2,250.00. The weekly rate, $900.00 for each whole week, is 2 weeks or $1,800.00, so the weekly rate wins: one week beats daily once the rental runs past 3.6 days. Ask whether the yard will price a week plus extra days: one week and 2 days at the daily rate would be $1,400.00, $400.00 less. The example keeps the $1,800.00. Add $150.00 delivery and pickup, a $120.00 permit fee from the example city, and 9 round trips of 24 miles at $0.62 a mile ($133.92), and site costs are $2,203.92.

Step 7: price the mural

Line Amount
Paint, primer, sealer and sundries $724.00
Design fee $1,434.20
Your painting: 49.29 hours x the $69.71 floor $3,436.01
Lift, delivery, permit and travel $2,203.92
Mural cost $7,798.13
Price at a 30% margin $11,140.18

That is $23.29 per painted square foot, or $18.63 per square foot of the wall less openings, so say which one your quote means. The 30% margin is a 42.9% markup on cost; the markup vs margin chart works both ways. A 40% deposit of $4,456.07 at signing covers the materials and site costs ($2,927.92) before you buy or rent anything; a 30% mid-point payment of $3,342.05 and a final $3,342.05 on completion make up the rest.

Checking a mural per square foot price

If you quote from a price list instead, check it against the wall. At $18.00 per painted square foot plus the design fee, this mural quotes at $10,045.40, above a $2,500 minimum. Against the $7,798.13 cost, that earns a 22.4% margin. Break-even on this wall is $13.30 per square foot, so the example rate covers cost, but a 30% margin needs $20.29, which would add $1,094.79 to the quote. A rate that pays on one wall may not pay on the next; run each mural on its own numbers.

The insight: the paint is the small line

Paint, primer, sealer and sundries are 6.5% of the $11,140.18 price. A mural priced as “supplies times something” misses where the money goes. Your painting time is $3,436.01, 31% of the price, and the lift for the booked days costs more than every can of paint. Two inputs to watch closely: the share of the wall that is detail, which on this wall took 62.5% of the brush hours on 40% of the area, and the number of days the lift sits on site. Measure your own detail rate on a past wall before you trust any per square foot figure.

How these were calculated

The floor is (income / (1 - tax share) + business costs) / (booked hours x (1 - share lost) x weeks). Painted area is width x height less the openings, times the design’s share. Paint is painted area x coats / coverage / (1 - share lost), rounded up to whole quarts, and never less than one quart per color; primer and sealer are rounded up to whole gallons. The design fee is design hours at the floor plus mockups. Hours are priming, transfer, background per coat, detail and sealing, and days are the hours over the working part of a day, rounded up, each with its setup. The lift is the cheaper of all-daily and whole weeks. Price is cost / (1 - margin), with figures carried from step to step as the spreadsheet shows them, to the cent. Every figure was computed twice, once by the code behind the product below and once by an independent program that adds quarts one at a time, adds days until the work fits and adds lift weeks until they cover the booking, and the two agree. All inputs are illustrative, not label figures, measured rates or market prices. None of this is financial, legal or tax advice. For a plain interior repaint rather than a design, the room painting post is the closer fit.
