How Much to Charge for Tutoring: Tutoring Rates Per Hour, Worked

October 19, 2026 · Freelance and creator rates

To work out how much to charge for tutoring, start from the income you want to keep for the year, gross it up for the tax you set aside, add your yearly costs, and divide by the session hours students will actually pay for after cancellations. That gives your hourly floor, the least a paid tutoring hour can bring in. In the illustrative example below, the floor is $62.10 an hour. Packages, online sessions, groups and test prep are all priced from that one number.

This post does not quote what other tutors charge. Tutoring rates per hour copied from someone else carry their subject, their hours and their costs, not yours. A floor built from your own numbers tells you the least you can charge; what families near you will pay is a separate question.

The tutoring rate formula

paid hours a year = hours booked a week x (1 - cancellation share) x weeks
hourly floor = (income wanted / (1 - tax set-aside) + yearly costs)
                    / paid hours a year

Prep, admin and travel are not in the paid hours. They are work, but a student does not pay for them by the hour, so the floor has to cover them.

Step 1: tutoring rates per hour from your own year

These figures are illustrative, chosen to show the method. The tutor wants to keep $35,000 after a 20% tax set-aside, has $1,500 of yearly costs, books 18 session hours a week for 44 weeks, and loses 8% of booked hours to cancellations that are not paid.

Step Working Result
Profit before the tax set-aside $35,000 / (1 - 20%) $43,750
Business costs books, software, insurance, driving $1,500
Revenue needed sum $45,250
Paid hours 18 booked a week x (1 - 8% cancelled) x 44 weeks 728.64
Hourly floor $45,250 / 728.64 $62.10

Ignore the cancellations and the floor looks like $57.13. Charged on the hours that are actually paid, that rate leaves the year $3,620 short of the revenue it needs. Count your cancellations from your own calendar; it is the input that moves the floor quietly.

What your hours really pay

The floor pays for more than the session. The example tutor also spends 15 minutes preparing for each session hour, 4 hours a week on scheduling, messages and progress notes, and 3 hours a week driving. Over the year that is 1,218.8 hours worked against 728.64 paid, so only 60% of the tutor’s working time is paid. Kept income per hour worked is $28.72, less than half the $62.10 floor.

That gap is the reason a tutoring rate that looks high is not. A family sees the hour at the table; the rate pays for the prep, the messages and the drive around it. The freelance hourly rate calculator post walks through the same billed-hours step for other kinds of freelance work.

Per session or a package: the insight the pack is built on

Say the tutor charges $65 for a 60-minute session, an illustrative price above the $62.10 floor for that length. A prepaid package of 10 sessions at 10% off is $585.00, which looks like $650.00 less a discount.

But 10 single sessions do not bring in $650.00. With 8% cancelled without pay, they bring in $598.00. A prepaid package, if your policy says a missed session is used, loses nothing to cancellations. So the real comparison is the package against $598.00, not against $650.00:

Package discount Package price Singles after cancellations Package minus singles
0% $650.00 $598.00 $52.00
5% $617.50 $598.00 $19.50
8% $598.00 $598.00 $0.00
10% $585.00 $598.00 -$13.00

At 10% off, the package earns $13.00 less than selling the same sessions singly. At 8% off, it breaks exactly even. The largest package discount that leaves you no worse off is your cancellation share, and that only holds if the package terms say missed sessions are not refunded.

Online vs in-person tutoring rates

A higher price can pay less per hour. In the example, the in-person session is $70 and the online one $60, but the in-person session needs a 40-minute round trip and the online one 10 minutes of setup:

In person Online
Price per session $70 $60
Session plus travel or setup 60 + 40 min 60 + 10 min
Costs per session 12 mi x $0.40 = $4.80 tools $0.50
Per hour of your time $39.12 $51.00

Counted against all the time it takes, the online session pays more. To match it, the in-person session would need to be $89.80. The cost per mile is the tutor’s own estimate, not a published mileage rate.

Group tutoring rates

A group of 4 students at $35 each for a 90-minute session, with 10 minutes of extra marking for each added student, takes 2 hours and pays $67.00 an hour after materials, above the $65 one-to-one rate, while each student pays 64% less than a private session of the same length. Below $34.00 a student, the group earns less than teaching one student.

Test-prep packages

Test prep shows the hours problem inside a single package. 8 sessions of 90 minutes are 12 hours with the student, but with prep, scoring practice tests and parent meetings the package takes 19.75 hours. Priced on all of them at the floor, plus $40 of materials and a 15% premium (the example’s choice), the package is $1,460, or $182.50 a session. Per contact hour that is $121.67, nearly twice the floor, so it helps to show the hours behind the price when you quote it.

How these were calculated

Paid hours are hours booked a week x (1 - cancellation share) x weeks. The floor is (income / (1 - tax set-aside) + yearly costs) / paid hours. Hours worked add prep minutes per paid hour, admin and travel. A package is rate x sessions x (1 - discount); singles are rate x sessions x (1 - cancellation share). Per hour of your time is (price - session costs) / ((session + travel or setup minutes) / 60). The test-prep price is (all package hours x floor + materials) x (1 + premium), rounded up to the next $10. Every figure on this page was computed twice: once by the code behind the product below, and once by an independent program that walks the year week by week and adds up packages session by session. The two agree to the cent. All incomes, hours, rates and prices are illustrative inputs, not market rates. None of this is financial, legal or tax advice.

To run this on your own year and schedule, the pack below has seven linked calculators, including what a tutoring platform’s commission costs you a year and whether a week’s schedule fits your hours.
