How Much to Charge for Sublimation Tumblers, Shirts and Mugs

To work out how much to charge for sublimation tumblers, add up the blank, paper, ink and tape in one tumbler, allow for the blanks lost to misprints, add your press and hand minutes at an hourly floor your year needs, spread any design time over the order, then add a margin. In the illustrative 40-tumbler order below, each tumbler costs $11.87 to make with your time paid, and a 25% margin prices it at $15.82, or $632.95 for the order.
None of these are market prices. Every price, ml, minute and misprint rate belongs to one made-up seller and is there to be replaced with your own receipts, printer software and clock. Set press time and temperature as the blank maker directs; nothing here says what they should be.
The sublimation pricing formula
cost per item = blank + paper + ink + tape
blanks to press = order / (1 - misprint rate), rounded up
cost per good one = blanks pressed x cost per item / order
time per item = (loads x minutes per load
+ blanks x hand minutes) / order
price = (cost per good one + time per item x floor
+ design time x floor / order) / (1 - margin)
Step 1: your hourly floor
The example seller wants $20,000 a year kept after a 25% tax set-aside, carries $5,000 of business costs, and spends 20 hours a week on production for 48 weeks. 10% of those hours go to test prints, printer cleaning and setup, leaving 864 paid production hours. Revenue needed is $31,666.67, so the floor is $36.65 per paid production hour. With 8 more unpaid hours a week of messages, listings and post office runs, the seller keeps $14.88 per hour actually worked. The freelance hourly rate calculator works through the same split.
Step 2: blank, paper and ink in one tumbler
A case of 25 blanks at $105.00 plus $12.00 shipping, a pack of paper, and an ink set at $80.00 for 280 ml, with 0.90 ml per print read from the printer software:
| Per tumbler | Cost |
|---|---|
| Blank, case price and its shipping | $4.68 |
| Paper | $0.20 |
| Ink | $0.26 |
| Tape, wrap and protective paper | $0.25 |
| Cost per item | $5.39 |
The blank is 87% of what goes into a tumbler. Ink, the thing that feels expensive when you buy it, comes to $0.71 together with the paper and tape.
Step 3: misprints
Ghosting, blowouts and crooked wraps cost a whole blank each. At the example’s 6% misprint rate, delivering 40 good tumblers takes pressing 43: the 3 spares cost $16.17, and the cost per good tumbler rises from $5.39 to $5.79. The rate is your own records; misprints you sell as seconds are not credited here.
Step 4: press time
Pressing 43 blanks 4 at a time takes 11 loads, each 10 minutes including loading and unloading. Add 6 minutes of hand time per blank for trimming, wrapping, taping, cooling, peeling and checking, and the order is 6.13 hours: 9.2 minutes per good tumbler. The spares take time too, and the last load runs short of full.
Step 5: the price
The order also takes 30 minutes of design and proofing, spread over all 40 tumblers.
| Per tumbler | Amount |
|---|---|
| Blank, paper, ink and tape, misprints included | $5.79 |
| Press and hand time: 9.2 min x $36.65 an hour | $5.62 |
| Design and proof time, 30 min over 40 | $0.46 |
| Cost per tumbler | $11.87 |
| Price at a 25% margin | $15.82 |
That is $632.95 for the order. The margin is profit on top of a floor that already pays the seller and the business: $158.24 on this order.
The insight: the blank dominates the materials, your time dominates the price
Inside the materials, the blank is 87%. But step back to the price: blank, paper, ink and misprints are 37% of the $15.82, while your press, hand and design time is 38%. Shopping for cheaper blanks helps; a faster load-and-peel routine, fewer misprints and fuller loads move the price as well.
That is also why the product you earn most on per item is not always the one that pays best per hour. Here is the tumbler beside a shirt and a mug, each with its own example price, cost per good item, shipping packaging and minutes, after a 6.5% selling fee and before your time:
| Product | Price | Cost | Packaging | Minutes | Left per item | Left per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tumbler | $15.82 | $5.79 | $1.60 | 9.2 | $7.40 | $48.27 |
| Shirt | $14.00 | $6.40 | $1.20 | 5 | $5.49 | $65.88 |
| Mug | $11.00 | $4.20 | $1.80 | 6 | $4.29 | $42.85 |
The tumbler leaves the most per item, $7.40, but the shirt leaves the most per hour, $65.88 against $48.27, because it presses faster. The mug is last on both. At the shirt’s rate, $1,500 a month takes 22.8 hours of shirts, if that many sell. Demand is not modeled; the table only says what each sale is worth for the time it takes. The screen printing pricing calculator works the same per-hour question for screen-printed shirts.
Bulk orders and shipping
A bulk discount. Say a customer asks for 15% off 50 tumblers. A bigger run presses faster in the example, 7.5 minutes a tumbler instead of 9.2. Left per tumbler after materials and press time drops from $4.41 to $3.08, and the discount costs $66.73 across the order, less than the $118.65 taken off the price, because the faster pressing gives some of it back. It still pays the floor: the largest discount that does, on these numbers, is 34.4%. Those per-tumbler figures leave out the design time, which a bulk order also needs.
Shipping. Packaging is $1.60 and the example’s postage $7.80, so sending one tumbler costs $9.40. Charging $6.00 for shipping leaves $3.40 short on every order. To offer free shipping instead, add $10.05 to the price; that covers the 6.5% selling fee on the added amount too. The Etsy fee calculator shows the fees on a listing line by line.
How these were calculated
The floor is revenue needed (income / (1 - tax set-aside) + costs) over paid production hours (hours x (1 - unpaid share) x weeks). Cost per item is the case price and its shipping over the blanks in a case, plus paper per sheet over designs per sheet, plus ml per print x ink price per ml, plus tape. Blanks to press are the order / (1 - misprint rate), rounded up, and the cost per good item is blanks pressed x cost per item / order. Press time is loads x (minutes per load + load and unload minutes) plus blanks x hand minutes, over the order. The price is (cost per good item + time per item x floor + design minutes x floor / order) / (1 - margin). Figures carried from one step to the next are rounded to the cent, as the spreadsheet shows them. Every figure was computed twice, once by the code behind the pack below and once by an independent program that counts blanks and loads one at a time and totals the order tumbler by tumbler, and the two agree. All inputs are illustrative, not market prices, measured times or misprint rates. None of this is financial, legal or tax advice.
To run this on your own blanks, press and clock, the pack below has eight linked calculators, from the hourly floor to the product comparison.
